Each certificate is linked to a MassID. Purchase and retirement receipts identify the certificates backing the credits involved.

Is a contract the same as a record?

The contract is the program. ERC-721 contracts issue individual records, such as MassIDs, certificates and receipts. ERC-20 contracts represent amounts of fungible credits, including fractions.
